Good deal and good product

This substrate is very profitable. I use it mixed with sand in my hermit crab tank. This gives the terrarium extra moisture, the crabs love to play in it and I think they might eat it. They also like to chew and eat the bark, so I figured they might like it. I was right.

Pros
  • GOLS certified
Cons
  • Low maintenance

Very sticky and very dry

I wanted to use this in my ball python tank. Would love to read reviews before purchasing. The substrate was very viscous and super dry. After wetting, the stringing only increased and I felt uncomfortable placing my boy there. I repackaged the foil and am sending it back. Now I use a different coconut fiber product.

Pros
  • Robust construction
Cons
  • Other interesting options are available.

Excellent value for money for reptiles and amphibians

I use it as a substrate in pots and also as a substrate for a turtle aviary. It expands A LOT and goes a long way. I found a few tiny bits of plastic in there which are a little bothersome if I hadn't noticed and my turtle is interested in eating them. The red-footed cub likes to burrow into it and has no problem. It's a lot cheaper than alternatives I've seen for sale.

Pros
  • Easy installation
Cons
  • High price

Doesn't hold moisture. Very viscous.

This substrate does not retain moisture well. It is very viscous and dries out daily. I had to water it everyday to keep it at 60-70RH for my ball python. Freedom Breeder works much better, as does Reptile Prime. The only problem I have with Reptile Prime is that the snake tends to put it in its mouth during feeding. I ordered this product because of the cheap price. Again, this is a case of "you get what you pay for".

Pros
  • An absolute legend
Cons
  • Difficult to answer

handy if you don't live near a pet shop

was intended to be used as substrate in a reptile terrarium but I bought it for my orchids as the orchid soil didn't dry out and their roots rotted. it seems to work well for her and I love the wild natural look it adds. In addition to moss, it is also a good addition to potting soil. A brick would be enough for a couple of orchid pots (I just ripped off a piece to moisten and use when it expands) or a small tank, a large tank might need a few

  • Free for educational purposes

  • Price of piggy bank

This works well as filler for my .

This is good planting material for my orchids. Not necessarily a product criticism, but two things to keep in mind when using them for this purpose: 1. The skin will turn red when watered which can stain anything you have under the plant. The side of the shell fragments is small enough to fall through the bottom of some Vanda baskets. You can solve this problem by filling the bottom of the basket with a couple of thin pieces of coconut lining, which are available cheaply from Revain or your…

Keeps soil good and moist

This is 5 stars because the product is very useful, easy on reptiles when used for that, keeps soil mostly moist and humidity levels and overall very good functional and natural view in Terrarium. However, I would 100% NOT recommend this for ball pythons or any other snakes because the first time I fed my snake this substrate in her new aviary, she missed her food and ended up choking on a piece of it - I had to use tweezers to get it out of my mouth which was probably extremely tiring and…

The only substrate I will ever use!

The only pad I will use. We adopted a little ball python in August and after trying different substrates we always had trouble getting the humidity levels up and down. Then I tried that. I soaked the brick in a bucket of warm water for about an hour, then broke it up and put it in a 10-gallon box. This gave about 3 inches easily. Dealing with humidity and temperature is not only a little easier, Mr. Snakey Snake clearly LOVES it. The first morning when I went to check before work I couldn't…
