I doubted it would actually work but it does! I used this to connect the HDMI output of a Raspberry Pi 3 B to an old HP S2031 monitor on a DVI input. Everything is automatically recognized correctly and the picture looks great. Works with both Raspbian Linux and Circle (Pi1541). Also tried with an industrial PC from Logic Supply under Ubuntu Linux, switching from HDMI to the same DVI input on an HP S2031 monitor also works great. I haven't tried switching from a DVI source to an HDMI input.
