Review on ☕ Efficient Black Mug Warmer for Home and Office Use by Mark Scoggins

Design flaws pose a safety hazard

I have two of these. The one with the date code 0915 was used in my office as a cup warmer and later in the day as a cold drink holder. I really enjoyed having something to warm up my coffee in the morning. Recently I came into the office in the morning and smelled a strong smell of burning. I traced it back to this mug warmer. Even though the switch was off, the light was red and the device was very hot. After unplugging it and allowing it to cool, I took it apart and found that the circuit board was shorted and some of the plastic around the switch housing was burned. I wonder how much more it would have melted if I hadn't been there to turn it off at the time. I contacted Underwriters Laboratories. Basically they said it was my fault: all heaters should be turned off when not in use. I was surprised that their tests make such an assumption as it's unlikely anyone actually does. In my opinion, there are two design flaws here: - The rear edge of the heating plate protrudes beyond the circuit board. If liquid drips onto the heating plate (necessarily into a cup holder/mug), it can drip onto the circuit board and cause a short circuit. If the switch was separate on the wire, it wouldn't be able to close even if the board gets wet. If you continue to use this device, do not let it get wet and unplug the power cord when not in use.

Pros
  • 17w cup warmer for use with coffee, tea, hot cocoa etc.
Cons
