If you've got lath and plaster and no drywall, don't worry about a nail finder or one of those smartphone-connected radars. Just use StudPop. It works and it works very well. With battens and plaster, you can sometimes rely on screws biting the battens to buy enough lighter items - small shelves, bookshelf speakers, and so on. But for monitor mounts, TVs, etc. you need to find your cleats. This little piece of ABS and neodymium (made in the USA!) uses an old craftsman trick to find the nails that attach the pole to the post. You'll move back and forth until you find one, then up and down making sure you've found the nail by finding the other nails in the row. Works like a charm and is easier than hanging a magnet on a string and swinging it back and forth. Keep it on the fridge with the rest of the magnets and you will never lose it because the cat will hit it under the sofa! (I speak from experience.)
