The old ones on my R171 SLK definitely gave me a few headaches. The new ones not only keep the deck's lid up, but open it fully after you've opened the lid about 80%. Easy to replace. I had no problems with the strut compression. Once you can easily remove the rubber bumper from the hinge with your fingers, you can open the cover wide enough to insert the new posts by first inserting the top ball on the stem into the post socket. I've removed the clips with a small screwdriver on the old ones to remove (post) and also the new ones to install, but I've read elsewhere after some people have been able to install the new ones without removing the clips. and reinstall later.
