Review on Lutron PD-15OUT-BL Smart Plug for Outdoors in Black by Billy Ivy

Works great and fills the gap of product

So happy Lutron introduced this to the Caseta compatible line. I use it to control a home water pump that I don't want to have running all the time but can't access it easily. Compared to my previous solution which was a remote cable and plug/dongle, this product allows me to control or schedule my pump at specific times and/or remotely. For example, if I run a drip irrigation system for 2.5 hours, I don't want or need the water pressure pump to work loudly. Now I can automatically schedule the smart plug to turn off at 2am before the irrigation system kicks in and keep it running quietly. I don't have any range issues despite using two extensions - a plug-in dimmer and an additional repeater - as part of my whole house curtain and lighting system. The Caseta system is probably the best "infrastructure" addition I have had in my life and their customer service is amazing. The only bummer is the addition of 3 picos on top of the smart plug handset itself from different bathrooms, which takes up valuable 'slots' in the Caseta system, which has a maximum of 75 devices. You don't need picos if you want to control it via the app, but I find it easier and people without an app can turn the smart plug on and off in real-time as needed. It would be great if Lutron could offer dedicated RF remotes along with a plug (outside the Caseta network) that would be in addition to any additional picos that can be added to the Caseta network via the app. Strictly speaking, this RF remote technology would probably be a step backwards for a demanding company, but it would be nice if the plug came with a couple of remotes that just worked out of the box.

Pros
  • ADD A SWITCH: For added convenience, use the Pico Wireless Remote (PJ2-2B-GXX-L01) to turn the lights on and off from anywhere in the home with the push of a button. Bridge not required
Cons
  • poorly thought out
