Great axle locks for cycling

I love these things. The lock itself works great, I've never had an axle slip or anything like that after driving hundreds of miles on all sorts of urban and rural sidewalks. These locks are the most aerodynamic and lightest I have ever seen purchased and in my experience they work reliably. I've left my bike outside for several hours in urban areas of Minneapolis with no problem. Although Minneapolis isn't San Francisco or New York, bike thefts certainly do happen. Yes, the inventory system that Pitlock uses is outdated - they have a model number for every conceivable combination of axle, hex, clamp and brake lock that you need to calculate. Yes, you must write the serial number on the key. Yes, shipping from Germany will take some time (about a month) if you need something with a custom key. No, I don't "live in fear" of losing my serial number - I think it's funny. If someone "lives in fear" of losing their pit lock serial number, why shouldn't they also live in fear of losing their pit lock key, D-lock key, and so on? It doesn't make any sense to me. The packaging comes with a hard plastic card with a serial number printed on it (similar to a credit card) and clear reminders to save the card and register online. The Pitlock website has a system where you create a login to which you link your serial number. But even without that, anyone can use their favorite cloud storage (Google, MS OneDrive, Apple iCloud, Dropbox, etc.) to store the serial number. Or just take a picture of the card and it will be saved to the cloud along with the other photos. I originally only started with the front axle 3 years ago and only blocked the rear wheel with the seat triangle. I recently upgraded to a nice Italian leather seat, so 2 months ago I ordered a bike seat clamp and serial rear axle to match my front axle. It arrived about 4 weeks after ordering and everything worked great. A pitlock on the rear axle is optional, but it gives me a little more flexibility when locking in those weird spots. My main complaint, contrary to all the other reviews, is that it's very difficult to find one that fits the pitlock wrench to my torque wrench. My torque wrench is 1/4" and my Pitlock is 14mm. I haven't found a hex nozzle like that yet.

Pros
  • Easy to assemble
Cons
  • There are even more interesting options.
