Had to turn this in after seeing all the reviews complaining of rapid wear. As with any sander, use the lowest speed required, keep the backing pad FLAT (tipping will only quickly gouge and wear the backing pad), DO NOT put pressure on the tool (it's own weight will do the work) and DO NOT change the paper, when the pad is hot. Added note - I used it for a couple of hours to sand down the nooks and crannies of a vintage car without noticeable wear (Rockwell set at 3.4 and speed #1) - gave it to my brother, melted in 5 minutes. Proper use is the key.
