I think it helps, but it's often hard to tell. They are a lot thicker than expected. They work best when the soft side is close to the face. But I find it almost impossible to keep the padding in that position. The entire strap wrap rotates around the helmet strap and gets out of position every time I take the helmet off. Also, they seem to work best if you have goggles that are on the outside of the strap wraps. My chin strap isn't too tight (because the helmet has a built in strap that tightens around the back of my head). But the tendency of the belt wraps to shift is quite frustrating.
