I'm installing strobe lights on construction trailers and have decided to attach lights with 8-32 machine screws. My previous method was to mark the hole with a punch, use a pilot bit to drill the first hole, use a #29 to finish the hole, and then a regular 8-32 tap and tap to be used to make the thread. At 2 holes per bracket, x 8 brackets per pendant, it took me some time to install the lights. I still punched my marks with this drill bit, but I used it to drill and cut holes in all the holes at once. NOTE: The thickness of the metal I'm working with is about 1/8 inch, so I set the clutch slip setting on my drill bit to about 10 out of 24. Also after the drill bit has punched the hole but before it starts threaded part. For cutting, I pause to apply lube to help the tapping process run smoother and stay cooler. I also find it important that all holes are straight and precise to avoid the risk of the drill breaking under load. After 16 holes the drill still works like new. And it easily cuts installation time in half or more! I will need more of these devices, they are worth it!
