Buying a prong collar was the last resort in controlling our 50 lb German Shepherd mix, who used to be a rural outdoor dog. He hunts prey, not treats, when small game (squirrels) are everywhere; he just wants to hunt. He is not aggressive towards other dogs and very friendly towards people - he just wants to catch and kill squirrels. From the first walk with Herm Sprenger's collar, my boy understood the limits of what is possible. I make sure it is loose when walking so that it does not cause discomfort when walking normally. A strong tug on the leash for the squirrel and he understood the message. This is not a collar to be worn all the time - it is for communication only and not a 'punishment'. My boy understands that and that's why it's much more pleasant to go with him. The quality of the collar is excellent and the result is worth the price.
