I have a Scotts S1642 (1642H) lawn tractor with a Kohler Command CV16S engine. John Deere (over $200) and Kohler (about $200) found race numbers that match the numbers listed for this backup racer. Ordered a starter listed as used and saved some money. The "used" starter looks great, what was in the box is cardboard waste. The original starter mount is 2.25 inches. The interchangeable mount is 2.1 inches. If we compare the distance from the center of the shaft to the end of the gas engine mount then it is the same so the gears mesh properly. The .15 inch metal missing from the replacement bracket is located at the end of the bracket's screw head. This will move the shroud closer to the bendix and require the bolts to go deeper into the gas engine. The bolt depth is ok but the case hit the bendix. Use two flat washers on each screw to separate the cover from the bendix. It is extremely important to have good electrical connections at the battery and solenoid. The nuts on my solenoid are badly rusted. (The solenoid can be accessed by removing the battery. I will replace the nuts with brass nuts.) After cleaning all the connections the starter works fine.
