My previous modem was a Motorola Surfboard which I was quite happy with, but after looking for something more reliable I came across TP-Link. I'm pretty good with computers etc but when it comes to modems, routers and anything connected to the internet I still have trouble detecting 1200 baud modems. Therefore, I rely on the reviews and experiences of other users. Before Motorola, I had a separate modem and router, and I had to keep resetting them because they stopped communicating with each other. My cable installer explained that this is greatly reduced with the combo box. Motorola still let me turn off the whole device, wait 15 seconds, and turn it back on, except it wasn't that easy. There was no switch, it had to be turned off. When I saw that this modem had an actual switch I figured that was an improvement and that alone would convince me to buy it. So after two years of use it worked pretty well. Even though I lose my internet connection from time to time, I don't know if it's the modem or my cable provider. After reading some recent reviews here I am now convinced that it is a modem. The router works great as far as my consumer brain can tell. I can tell by the WiFi icon on my phone/iPad, even though I don't have an internet connection. When I saw this WiFi icon it was easy to blame my ISP, now I'm not so sure. Now there is another big problem with this modem that no one tells you about. I would give one star for that alone, but I still gave three, which is probably too much. I have a Brother wireless laser printer that can print wirelessly. However, this modem/router does not support this. When buying a modem/router I had three requirements and this was one of them. And it was one of those purchases where you have to buy it to see what it SHOULD NOT do. It was too late to return it, so now I have to email everything I need to print to my wife's laptop, bring it to the printer and plug it in with a cable. What a real pain.
