Review on 🧢 Lion Brand Yarn 828-203 Mindful Mauve Shawl in a Ball Yarn, One Size by Gelin Battle

Interesting yarn with nice long colored stripes

I was very interested in trying Lion Brand's new yarn, Shawl in a Ball. This yarn should be enough for a scarf. While this may be true for knitting, it was a bit off with crochet. This is not uncommon as it takes more yarn to crochet a shawl of the same size than to knit. I first became interested in this yarn to knit something for my oldest daughter who is allergic to wool. The color changes in this yarn are reminiscent of the color changes in more expensive yarns that contain wool, so I figured it might work. The yarn is listed as a 4 weight worsted yarn. In fact, it changes repeatedly from 2 to 4 depending on the amount of acrylic yarn. is on the backing thread. The backing thread is white pleated cotton with acrylic thread wrapped around it. Acrylic is the part of the yarn that changes color. The yarn consists of 58% cotton, 39% acrylic and 3% other. I have no idea what the third fiber is made of. As with all new yarns I try, I half crochet the scarf to see how the yarn works. For the scarf I knitted with this yarn, I knitted 200 with 2 more chain stitches to turn. I work half double crochet into each chain stitch with 2 more chain stitches to turn and repeat until I run out of yarn. I used a J/10 (6mm) hook as recommended on the skein. The resulting scarf measures approximately 86 x 11 inches. The feel of the yarn in my hand while crocheting was not uncomfortable. I could tell it was cotton due to a slight lack of stretch, but the acrylic mitigated that feeling a lot. As long as there is a slight roughness I wouldn't call it prickly. I used two strands and did not encounter a knot in the fiber. The fabric is very loose and the scarf is thin but it is exactly what I was hoping for. I made it long enough for my tall daughter (6'2") to wrap it around her neck or tie it in the front. It lays nicely around my neck. I loved the result so much I bought another scarf in a different color scheme. Now I intend to knit at least one skein of each color combination (two if both daughters want the same scarves. Personally, if I were to crochet the shawl, I would need two skeins to make a large shawl make, not a tiny one.I will be adding photos of the scarves I made and will update them with other color combinations in the future.
