There are 2 types of Shimano SPD cleats. These and SH56 (they have a capital "M" written on them). Both work with a Shimano SPD clamp. The difference, I'm told, is that the SH56 (not this one) is a light trigger, which I think is useful if you're afraid of falling and don't want your feet getting stuck in the pedal. It's not an easy solve, so they're useful for things like spin classes where (hopefully) there's no chance of you falling off. I have bought and tested both types (see my review on page SH56). I used both on the regular Schwinn spin cycle. I think they are a little firmer (important when climbing hills with a lot of headroom) and I would recommend them for spinning. Hope that helps. (I have no idea why bike spikes have to be so complicated)
