Good for intended use

Have had this radar detector for about a week. I waited to write a review until I found the perfect situation to test the range. Last night after work I took a different highway than I normally drive to pick up some stuff, a highway known for being full of cops. Immediately after leaving the route without even picking up speed, my radar detector warns of the Ka area. I accelerated to a speed where they wouldn't stop me and waited, the car pulled me away and I was still waiting for the cop. At one point I thought the car that passed me scared off the Ka group because I just didn't see the cop. Drove 1-2 miles and guess what I saw; yes, the cop rests with his back to me in the middle. I knew it even before the car passed me. I could tell when they spotted him as they slammed on the brakes. Those poor guys weren't pulled over, but I knew about the cop before they did. To be honest, if it wasn't for RD, this would be the first time I've been pulled over for speeding. It was dark, he was sitting in a good spot with no light. Normally I can see the cops very well, but at night it becomes 10 times more difficult. The radar detector isn't reliable, but with the 1-2 mile range I've had in fairly heavy traffic I can say it probably paid for itself in this one situation. I found many cops with it, but there was never an ideal situation where it would most likely save me from a speeding ticket like in this situation. So now I can say with confidence that, mounted high on a tall car, it did its job and alerted me to the possible presence of the police long before it was necessary to stop me from getting a speeding ticket. I recommend that people learn how police radar works and generally understand how the police catch speeders because an RD doesn't always save time. But it also works in situations where it's literally the only thing you can count on because you have no vision and you don't know where you are on that road.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Reliability
