Install these splitters first on either side of the existing cat5 line that runs from the router (bottom) to the desktop (top). After confirming that the first line worked, I connected a second additional cable from port 2 of the router to the splitter 2 connector, and then connected the laptop's connection cable to port 2 of the splitter connector above. Temporarily disabled router port 1 to ensure signals are isolated. After everything was working fine, I bought short Category 6 patch cords (each 12 inches long) so I could manage the cables better since I don't need 3-foot cables from the router to the splitter. Signals by running Port 1 and Port 2 from the router to two different computers, using 1 existing Category 5 cable in the wall.
