I've used it on my workstation where I don't have an optical drive; I had to install some software that came on a CD and that did the job. Also, I used it today to burn DVDs and install other software. Basically it's a nice drive to keep on your desk when you need an optical drive. I can confirm that both reading and writing DVDs and reading CDs work. I haven't tried burning a CD yet, but if it burns a DVD it should be able to burn CDs with no problems. When I burned a DVD, I connected both power and USB because the first attempt to burn a USB-only DVD failed halfway through the burn process. Not sure if this was a disc or drive error; but the drive was disconnected from my computer, which damaged the DVD-R. When burning the DVD I used 4x burning speed (the burner says it supports 8x but I haven't tried it). Nor was He warm when He burned the panes; This is nice to see because it means there is no stress on the drive. It was also almost silent the entire time (both reading and writing).
