I bought this assuming it was 18/10 SS as stated in the product description. That's not the case. Some information about stainless steel. Stainless steel is an alloy of chromium, steel, iron, molybdenum, nickel and other metals. Nickel is magnetic, but when added to a steel mix, changes in its structure due to the magnetic field cause the steel to become non-magnetic. Common types of stainless steel: 18/0 - 18% chrome, nickel-free 18/8 - 18% chrome, 8% nickel 18/10 - 18% chrome, 10% nickel. If the stainless steel is magnetic, there is no nickel. If stainless steel is not magnetic, then nickel is present. The magnet sticks to this riser like there's no tomorrow, meaning there's no nickel, which in turn means it's not 18/10 SS. That also means it's not an 18/8 SS.
