I am an Occupational Therapist doing home care with geriatric patients. I'm constantly looking for specific adaptive devices to make my patients' bathrooms safer. Unfortunately, many people hesitate to give up aesthetics for safety! That means they don't put actual railings in their tiled showers as it would ruin their tiles. That's where this product comes in. I looked at several different brands before purchasing these for my patients. I've tried it on many different surfaces since then and it works with varying results depending on where you place it. I tried it on the walls - it sticks for about 1/2 hour. Do not do that. You end up hurting yourself! Even if your wall has no texture, it will come off. If you use it as a grab rail to get in and out of the tub, it works great! This suction cup will not come off no matter how you pull it. Also, it's not big enough to catch your legs if you try to throw them over the edge (think older patients who have hip and knee mobility issues). In a real shower, your results will vary again. . A shower with a smooth surface, like laminate or faux tile, works best. However, I've had pretty good results with tiled showers too. Just make sure at least one of the suction cups is exclusively over the tile and not over the grout. Sometimes the grout lines don't provide the surface area the cup needs for firm suction. So it's important to make sure you're attaching this to a surface that can provide a good seal. Leave the handrails unused for about 4-5 hours. If it falls, it will fall itself during that time. If it's still on after that, you're probably good to go. But I pulled it a couple of times just to be sure. When I first bought it I did some test runs on surfaces at home. I decided that if it didn't work out I would keep the box and all the packaging and have no hesitation in returning it. So far I've placed 4 of these in patients' homes and that says a lot as I'm the one on the line if they don't work. Update 3/13: Fast forward a few years. I gave this recommendation to several patients at the time, but only with the caveat that people only use it for stability. Now I'm even stepping back from that advice. I have a lot more experience with it now, and even the brands I "recommended" back then are now off my list. You can't trust them completely and it's better to be safe than sorry to be a cliché. I don't want to go back to what I said, but I personally saw, even after a couple of weeks, how a good tight seal came off a person's hands. This is not good. If you live in a rented home and your manager doesn't allow you to install actual grills, then you may have no choice but I would pull and inspect those grills daily and especially before you keep them. Even in these circumstances, there are tension rods and tub clamps that can provide more stability than suction cup rails. This is my new approach.
