Review on 🚲 Topeak DeFender RX Rear Bicycle Fender: Optimal Protection for Your Bike by Adam Gray

Great idea, poorly thought out design

This fender looked really good at least on my mtn bike. But unfortunately it offers nothing other than optics. There are some decent ideas here, but I think Topeak forgets to do some sort of quality control, prototype testing (or whatever) before shipping to retailers. This wing's adjustable leading edge is great for extra spray control, and the idea of making it a quick-change element is a great idea on paper. Unfortunately, that's all good I can say about this product. As mentioned earlier, the quick release design needs serious improvement. It consists of a strap threaded through a piece of plastic. When I mounted it on my bike, the fender wouldn't stay in line with even the slightest bump. I ended up using both velcro and zippers to hold it in place, which completely negated the use of quick-release buckles. Strike 1. The design offers very limited placement and is not adjustable at all. The only two places that allows for movement is the front edge of the fender (which is a big plus!) and there's a pivot point right where the arm attaches to the seatpost. So once you have this in your seat, all you really can do is tilt the back of the fender up. Not entirely bad, but on a full-suspension bike you're almost guaranteed to get a lot of tire rub. Jumping the curb today my tire hit the fender, shattering the front lip and cracking the fender in multiple places. Strike 2. I would suggest a 3rd strike, but as the wing broke after just five miles city driving that pretty much sums up my experience with it. So recommending it to others would be an absolute no. . There are several other fenders on the market that fit better, are made of better materials, and are better in every way.

Pros
  • Fits me great
Cons
