Lots of visible air gaps around wing, center section not included

I installed this in a duplex rental in Minnesota last fall and filled the door opening with fiberglass insulation for the winter while doing a pre-rental renovation. Things have changed and I recently moved into the lower unit while I finish renovating the upper unit and the exterior of the house. I just changed my mailing address so I removed the temporary insulation (it's finally getting warm in here!) to allow the mail to pass through this door slot. That's when I noticed all the gaps on the slit valve. There are enough of these, and the corner gaps are large enough for insects to get in in the summer and cold drafts in the winter. Another downside is that without a center piece that fits between the door slot, there are sharp metal edges that can easily cut anyone who drops mail through the slot. As a craftsman/carpenter, I installed the post slot quickly and easily with a circular saw and drill. I filled in the sharp edges as best I could instead of buying the center piece (sold separately and expensive). Now my biggest concern is the air gaps around the wing leaving open airflow and access to insects. Since the flap needs to work to insert mail, I can't think of a way to change it to fix this problem. Due to valve air gaps and the expensive slit center piece not included, I give this item 1 star and do not recommend this product. If anyone has an idea how to fix the air gap issue, please leave a comment. Many Thanks
