Easy-to-Find Drivers

RS-485 Base USB Converter. Allows connection to multiple automation devices such as temperature controllers, frequency converters, microcontrollers and programmable relays. The drivers are easy to find and the screw terminals have a nice feel, allowing you to make your own cable. One issue is that the case is so cheap it almost comes off, but it works well for significantly less money so I can excuse the poor quality of looks. Note that this is an unshielded 2-wire serial connection and is subject to electrical noise that can cause problems. I've bluescreened my computer several times while observing inductive switching. A twisted pair of shielded wire and a ferrite bead is probably a good idea.

Pros
  • USB Network Adapter
Cons
  • Requires Socket
