Review on KYB SS10317 - Steering Stabilizer for Enhanced Control and Stability by Kenneth Murphy

KYB should provide a rubber boot on the steering damper. Good damper at a reasonable price!

I ordered a KYB steering damper but didn't realize it didn't have the correct rubber boot attachment. This is odd as the damper is made for trucks and every other damper/shock I have ever bought for my jeep has had a trunk cover. The only exception are dampers/shock absorbers that already have a protector at the end of the stem. For example Old Man Emu. . The end of the tube is the thick end that contains the piston, seal, oil, etc. The end of the shaft has a chromed metal rod that goes in and out of the tube. The end of the tube usually has a round metal plate about 1.5 inches in diameter. It mounts where the stem is welded into the "eye" (large hole at the end of the shock). The thick end of the boot slips onto the cylinder (tube) and secures with a zip, and the smaller end has a fold that appears to slide around the round flat metal at the end of the pole. The cover protects the stem from dirt, mud, dirt, water, etc. and generally prolongs the life of the shock absorber. I would pay $1 more for a case. I just don't understand why manufacturers, especially ones like KYB, don't add this simple feature. Functionally, it works as advertised. However, I have 31x10.50 all terrain tires on my Jeep. If you have 33 x 12.50 or larger you may look for one of the traditional jeep/truck shocks. The reason is that the tube is significantly smaller in diameter than my previous Rancho 5000 shock, which had a protective sleeve. This tells me the piston is significantly smaller and so probably not intended for big tires or serious off-road use. Just a guess on my part.
