I was looking for a high tech approach to naval flares and was pleased to learn that the Coast Guard has updated railcar requirements to include bright flashing LED lights. The Sirius signal distress signal has a distinctive feel. Batteries were simply inserted into the handle and the device was ignited by simply twisting the lens. Attached to the lantern are two thin straps of dense bungee-like material. These straps are useful for attaching the flashlight in an emergency. So instead of buying (and discarding) torches every three years, I just need to check (and/or replace) the batteries. Simple solution.
