Although the head is 1" in diameter, the rest is only 1/2" in diameter. The first thing I tried with this was a 14 inch hollow mold on a lathe. It is not strong enough to resist twisting with every slight change in density of the wood. A few times it's gone so far out of the loop that I've had trouble getting the bit out of the latch and I use Forstner carbide bits for the job. If it's made entirely of 1 inch stuff, that would be a good tool.
