Also works very well with Hillman 3/8 Brass Threaded Insert

Although only EZ-Lok numbers are mentioned I found this 500-5 to work very well with Hellman 3021 3/8-16 Brass Threaded insert works. Note that there are tabs on either side of the 500-5 that must fit into the insertion slots. The slots of many Inserts are too narrow for these bosses. But the Hellman 3021's slots are wide and work very well. Assuming you're willing to shell out about $2 for a 3/8 insert, Hillman is the strongest insert in my opinion and works great on both softwood and hardwood. The 3/8" Hillman is nearly 1" long and should have more pull in softwood than shorter inserts and also work well in hardwood (if you have the length available). An added benefit is that brass inserts add a noticeable have lower friction than steel inserts.I can drive a 500-5 straight with my impact drill and pop the insert out with the same tool if I hold down a lot of pressure. The only limitation on this 500-5 is that its outside diameter is larger than the Hillman recommended 15/32" diameter hole and I have to stop when the insert is flush. I like to hammer the Hillman insert a little deeper for optimal strength. The T-handle hand tool, the Hillman sells for about $7, has an OD less than 15/32, and can drive the insert down flush with a turn or two on the end, and the insert off pull back flush at bottom to become flush with same tool. My impact drill 500-5 can start and end flush on the outside. I also bought a 500-4 which works well with Hillman 5/16" inserts, but Hillman 5/16" is much shorter than Hillman 3/8 so I went with Hillman 3/8". and spent the money.
