Once the mechanism is installed the final step is to install the plastic step itself. You insert 3 flat nuts into the blind pockets on the step and snap the step onto the bracket. Then install the 3 bolts from the bottom through the step, the metal bracket and into the nuts. This was confusing because the bolts had to be threaded through a hole in the tread, through a metal brace, and then into the pocket nuts. What happened is that the screws screw into a plastic hole and almost seem to tighten when removed and start turning. They didn't even reach the real steel nuts so you literally have to push until they go through the fake threads they made into the plastic hole and connect to the nuts. I thought I stripped and disassembled the first screw before realizing it. If you haven't used a torque wrench or are less experienced, you might think it was bolted on if it was just screwed into a hole (rather than a nut). I think a heavy zinc coating (a good thing) can make the bolts bigger than the hole and cause incorrect threads.
