I'm in no way a trained carpenter or craftsman. I'm a 41 year old housewife who decided to take our carpeted staircase after watching some CIY videos on YouTube. I'm bad at math and measuring. After purchasing a 1X2 and trimming it down to 40" for use with this tool, I was able to successfully cut 16 steps to the exact length on my first try! Each rung/step had to be equipped with this tool. Then cut to size, then dry before the wood is stained/polished. Pro tip: Use a marker to mark the right and left sides of the tool before use. , will help you remember which side is the right side and which side is the left side.
