I tried the Milescraft dowel clamp kit based on an online video review and was impressed with how well it worked, especially given its reasonable price. I used it in a storage shelving project I'm building as a flat bookshelf. Dowels are installed between fixed shelves and side walls and between cross braces and side walls and floors. So I had 90 degree butt joint scenarios both on the edge and in the field. With this jig I was able to get pretty accurate centering, maybe just under 1/64 of an inch. I love that it comes with sharpened bits because once the bit starts biting it doesn't want to drift off. The locking rings are decent but the hex bolts are a little soft so I removed one of those. Maybe it's my fault that I took too long. But since it protrudes slightly above the surface of the collar, I can easily tighten and loosen it with pliers. I prefer these collars to others I have used but they have never been able to be tight enough to prevent slipping. I like that the kit includes some centering dots for marking holes in situations where the tool cannot be used. The main downside is that when using this device you are using your muscles to hold the device in place, not a device that can get pinched. Work. In practice, I don't see this as a huge issue, and the fact that he comes with attachments really helps mitigate the tendency for him to want to jump anyway. I have another contraption that I've always feared. a little due to insufficient accuracy and complexity in the setting. Thanks to the Milescraft dowel jig, I'm no longer afraid of dowels and will use them much more often in the future.
