The opening angle of the can opener and the distance to the lid of the can leaves a hole about 3/8 inch below the rim. Get one of the old ones, they were given away for free before they invented lidded jars. You can probably find one at a thrift store or flea market for 5 cents. The bottle opener works well but mine came with a sharp but outer edge. At this price I would not recommend. PS - The wooden handle looked like it had a natural finish in the picture, but it's actually quite an ugly red color and one of the rivets is loose.
