Review on Paul Rubens Watercolor Premium Watercolors by Michelle Langley

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Glazing, spring work, leak sealing, raises are accepted. The overall quality is good!

The surface can be applied with several layers of watercolor paint, an ink pen (e.g. Micron, with a needle-sharp tip, the pen glides gently over the hot pressing surface) and lifted (cleaned / erased paint) without damage . The rubber seal around the edges prevents the bottom pages from leaking, but does not hold the paper flat when washed wet. There is a small gap at the top of the binding so you can later move a thin object to separate the sheets and I was concerned it might get in there. I didn't pay attention to that because I washed VERY wet. The paper underneath was completely clean, so no problem. It handled high water loads very well as a heat press is usually better suited for detailed, low water content applications. Unfortunately I'm deducting a star because honestly it could have been a little better. The cover sheet had many small imperfections including dirty sealing around the edges and some marks here and there. I don't think the curved edges are a good idea either, since the corners should be protected by a hardcover anyway. Now I just have to be careful with cropping if I want to frame the art later. You're barely a few millimeters left when you trim the curved edges and sealing compound to create a 5" x 7" rectangular photo frame. Whether you're traveling, painting while transporting, or doing city sketches, it's fun. The book-like hard surface even lets you balance a small travel palette on an open lap flap if space is tight. The paper is difficult to remove from the next sheet without a very thin object, I'm not sure the credit card won't scratch the next sheet so I used a thinner razor blade. A plastic razor blade would be a safer option and compact enough to fit in a travel bag. Refill note: I bought a small pad of paper that I couldn't find a Paul Rubens refill for either in size or in the heat press. However, I have found that the cold print version of their paper pad (also on Amazon) fits into a larger sleeve empty. They're glued on, so you have to go to the last page and then glue on a new notebook. There is no easy way to reuse them, although the cover is very pretty, like a hardcover book. Overall the price is reasonable even if you just change everything every once in a while.

Pros
  • Watercolor paper
Cons
  • So far so good
