This thing works fine with a pre-installed GRBL 1.1f, but if you're using a laser be aware that the homing cycle won't work. This is because you don't have a Z-axis motor or limit switch to activate. These boards were burned (coded) to use all three axes for homing. You would have to write separate boards for use with laser engravers, which is a shame as GRBL 1.1f includes new G04 features that are exclusive to lasers. My workaround used a dead stepper motor with a snap roller switch attached. The flat plane of the stepper wave activates the switch to go through the Z axis homing process and go to X and Y. Also note that you need to invert the homing switch signal if your boundaries are NC ($5 = 1). It took me a while to fix the homing. I used this board to hijack a cheap Chinese laser engraver that used a proprietary head unit and software (HMI). After the setup was complete, everything worked fine. Good luck with your project.
