First I put two sets (a pair) of such supports in two different trailers and bases in the third. I never had a problem until I bought my last set of truck trailer skid plates about a year and a half ago. The base plates have slots for the screw heads to slide into and there is extra steel behind these slots to allow the screw head to slide but be held in place when tightened. The steel on the back wasn't spaced properly and the screw heads didn't slide in place. I've been transporting bikes over the weekend, I've fitted upholstery and haven't had time to return the base plates. I sanded the screw heads on both sides just enough to match. I marked the screws to make sure I used them in the same places. I've loaded and moved bikes a few times since then. But last weekend I hit the wedge a little hard while towing the bike and the bolts popped out. It was unnoticeable since the blockage was still there (in other words, everything looked fine). I strapped the bike to the front in the usual way with additional straps around the forks and a secure strap at the back that pulls back and prevents the rear end from moving sideways. The bike didn't move 2 hours before going home. When I went to unload, the wedge that was attached to the wheel came back. I stopped before it slid under the front fender but what a shock! My old baseplates were never a problem, but this last set I received just wasn't tested properly. A failed copy and I'm now replacing it with something else in the trailer. I had an 04 VTX with me on this trip, which I like to take with me for fun jumps and twisty roads (I also got out of the trailer, so I liked the removable pads). If anything happened to him, I'd be a little angry, but okay. If it was my street glider or one of my friends Harley I would be furious!
