Works but temperature setting and thermometer are very inaccurate

I bought this heater on January 24, 2020. It has always heated my 50 gallons. but the thermometer became very inaccurate. I noticed that my fish (Mbuna Cichlid) started dying after a few months, mainly due to stress. After some research I found that with this heater the thermometer read about 4.6 degrees Fahrenheit - in other words it would read 80.4, but the water temperature was actually 85 degrees Fahrenheit - beyond the Mbuna limit (82 -84 ). This was verified with two different Thermopro thermometers, both of which differed from each other with an accuracy of 0.2 degrees and showed a high level of accuracy based on other tests. I didn't pay much attention to the heating setting itself, I relied on the thermometer. The heater setting was 28ยฐC or 82.4ยฐF. and I set it aside to heat a large amount of water, you may need to set it higher to get the temperature that shows on the thermometer. Indeed - the heater setting heated very well - and the 28ยฐC setting actually heated 1ยฐC or 2.6ยฐF higher than the setting itself. I'm not sure if this is a downside, but I think (not sure ) that initially both points were correct as the fish seemed quite happy and without any problems. but the problems started about 3 or 4 months after that. I absolutely cannot recommend this heater. I hate giving bad reviews but this product killed some of my fish and cost me over $150 because of it. Does he heat up? Absolutely, that's no problem. it's the accuracy of the temperature settings - that's far. But you get what you pay for - I paid $20 for it when I should have bought a higher quality product that would probably cost me $60. But when you add the additional cost of damage that a lower quality product like this can cause, paying shouldn't be a problem anymore. Lesson learned. However - if you buy this for the heat output itself and ignore the temperature settings and throw away the thermometer - and rely on more reliable temperature sensors - then it will work for you. But I wouldn't do that based on my experience.

Pros
  • Good product for the price
Cons
  • Vulgarity
