The space through which sand can fall is about the size of a speck of dust. Fine sand gets stuck in its path and stops your timer - not that you even know, because even when the passage is clear, the flow of sand is so barely visible that you have to hold the timer in front of your nose to see it. The wooden casing of the timer is so thin that it came in like a leaning tower of Pisa and fell apart on the second day.
