Review on Accurate Temperature Control with Maverick Baker's Oven Thermometer by Linh Hellmuth

Brings my favorite oven into the 21st century

The manual explains a little how ovens sense and respond to temperature and how a properly working oven will vary within 50 degrees throughout the cooking time (they will be 25 degrees above the set temperature and 25 degrees below the set temperature) and is still considered accurate. That's how they work. I'm pleased to know! The instructions are good. The readable display mount can be mounted in one of the following ways: 1. As a wall mount with a nail or screw2. Attach to oven/hood/fridge or other metal surface with strong magnet3. Free-standing as a small pedestal on a table top. I appreciate the original design of this mounting piece. Its timer will be useful in my home for cooking and non-cooking - runs up to 20 hours counting up or down. And it has sound functions to alert you to the time and/or temperature. I've messed up thermometers by overusing them and leaving them in ovens 24/7 all year round. I'll treat that more respectfully and only plan on using it to test my oven's accuracy before taking it out -- or if I'm baking a really delicate soufflé or whatever, I might leave it on for the entire cooking process -- but I think overuse thermometers are tough on them. I also plan on removing the battery when not in use. I hope that thanks to these measures it will serve me for several years. One small note I have so far is that the mount for the INTERNAL temp gauge hangs down about an inch from the rack. I would love to be able to place it over the counter if I wanted it there to get accurate readings. I suspect the reason was that the food had to hang down as it had to be on the shelf. However, this position may reflect a slightly different temperature, although that's probably not enough to worry about.
