I was very concerned about whether this monitor's resolution would match that of the iMac 27 5K or LG 5K monitor. Have worked with both monitors and played with them in the Apple Store. Always amazed at the resolution and clarity of both the LG 5K and iMac 27. From the perspective of a photographer and pixel watcher (and an LG OLED TV owner, an iPhone X), this 27-inch LG is as good as that LG 5K and iMac 27 5K at a fraction of the cost. 1) The resolution goes beyond what is called "retina" in my book. I can't even run this monitor at its full 4K resolution as it's outside of the "retina" at this point. It's essentially like the "Retina" on my iPhone X and my 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display. I wouldn't even hesitate to choose the LG 5K monitor over this monitor as the 5K resolution is completely unusable for practical purposes (i.e. 5K content on a 27" monitor looks so small it's unusable). 2) 27uk850 vs 27uk650 : USB-C is totally worth the extra $100. Not only seamless integration into the Apple ecosystem, but the back of this monitor (not the 650) has regular USB ports that can also be used to connect peripherals. For example, my wireless mouse (not bluetooth, with small receiver) connects to the back of the monitor and works fine with the MacBook. This saved me from having to buy a dongle to convert my mouse receiver to USB-C and saved me from using the MacBook's USB-C output to connect my mouse. 3) Charging your MacBook via USB-C is also important. Otherwise I would have absolutely run out of ports to connect anything to my MacBook (1 USB-C went to displays, 1 USB-C went to charging). 850 is absolutely worth the price over 650. Couldn't even live with 650 now that I see the difference. Please don't worry if it's "Retina" enough compared to the $1,300 LG 5K. It is absolutely sufficient "retina" with excellent color rendering. What's going on with DCI-P3 now, I'm not sure. On the other hand, I'm a photographer and never felt like I was missing "colours" even on my MacBook Pro monitor, which doesn't cover all of the DCI-P3. In my opinion, the additional cost of DCI-P3 in 2018 is absolutely ridiculous and the difference is probably very small for 97% of users. I could understand if your life depended on accurate color reproduction, but otherwise the DCI-P3 isn't worth the extra $700. Great monitor. The speakers are also a nice addition. Reduces desk clutter. And you can turn it off. In my opinion, the inclusion of USB-C and rear monitor ports to connect other peripherals via regular USB is totally worth the premium over the 650, even without the speakers.
