Great router for basic home use

**Updated January 2, 2012** A new firmware version, 1.00.46, has just been released on the Belkin website. After applying this update, the intermittent slowdown mentioned in the overview below seems to be resolved. However, there is no DHCP reservation yet. **Original review** I have a 2000 sqm apartment. ft. We are a very close-knit family, we have many devices and a large reliance on the internet. My goals were: to have full WiFi coverage in the house that would allow me to take full advantage of my 30MB/5MB internet connection; allow video content to be streamed from a central server to multiple devices throughout the house and have a stable product that once set up I didn't have to struggle with. My technical level is above average. I've tried some of the best ASUS and Linksys products. Asus lost the WAN connection for about 5 seconds about every 30 minutes. The Linksys 5 GHz radio stopped working after a week. I decided to give the Belkin a try after reading a mostly positive review on a very trusted online site and found that for the price it was hard to go wrong. Revain provided me with a router the next day. Installation took about 5 minutes - I didn't use the disc that came with it - easy to set up via the web interface. I can't imagine people having trouble setting up this router - it even comes with an ethernet cable and power adapter already connected. First, if you're looking for a router with tons of customization options, look elsewhere. The firmware here is very basic and even lacks some amazing "standard" features like DHCP reservation. However, it has what you need for most domestic situations and is presented in a relatively simple and easy to understand way. This router also uses a chipset that isn't supported by third-party firmware, leaving you stuck with what Belkin has to offer. The range for 2.4 GHz is excellent. I have a full, full speed connection in every room of the house and in my little yard. 5GHz is not that strong. 5 GHz will always be more difficult to penetrate walls than 2.4 GHz, so expect some reduction in range. However, compared to the Asus and Linksys I've tried, the Belkin 5GHz is weaker. My HTPC is in line of sight of the router, about 30 feet away, so it works fine for my purposes, but the signal drops off drastically once you leave the room. The speed is good. While I've seen Windows report >300Mbps connections on 5GHz channels, you obviously don't come close to that speed in use. In the best case I see 12-14 MB/s, which is actually very, very good for WLAN. I can stream HD over my internal network while still making the most of my internet connection with no issues. I had an issue where the router slowed down after a period of use. My maximum internet speed is around 17 MB/s instead of the 30 I usually see. It only seems to happen after prolonged periods of heavy internet use, e.g. B. if you stream several hours of HD videos from Netflix. Changes to the router (e.g. changing DNS settings) "fix" the problem. Belkin has a "self-healing" option, which is really just a scheduled router reboot that can be used to fix this issue. This also does not happen when the router is used in access point mode. Aside from this issue, I haven't had any stability issues. I've had the router since July and we use the internet extensively every day so the problems would be obvious. I would like Belkin to fix the firmware issue mentioned above and add a DHCP reservation, but I am able to configure the device. How it does exactly what I want is more than I can say about some of the "better" and more expensive options I've tried. All in all, this is a budget router that works well and does what it's supposed to do. I am happy with my purchase.
