Great for kayaks! Best in Canvas and Mounts

I used these to mount my kayak on the roof of my '03 Chevy Blazer 4 door and they worked great! I was a little skeptical because I used ratchet tow straps and they CLOSED the kayak on the roof. However, I've read that you run the risk of damaging the kayak by squeezing it too tight with ratchet straps. With these cam straps, the kayak is not as tight, but more than adequately secured. I strapped my 10ft Ascend FS10 recreational kayak to the roof and cruised the freeway for 4 hours averaging 60-70mph. I used them in combination with these J-Bars. Cam straps from SmartStraps are way better than the straps that come with those J-Bars. The webbing is wider and thicker. Camlock is bigger. I used one strap for each J-Bar which means if you buy this product and SmartStrap Cam Straps you can carry 2 kayaks on the roof at once: TMS 2 Pairs J-Bar Rack HD Kayak Carrier Canoe Boat Surf Ski Off - Road Bar Roof Mount I'm sure there are many other good uses for these straps but if like me you are looking for a good set of cam straps for your kayak this is a cost effective solution! A few tips/comments: 1. I didn't know when I bought them, but each strap has a non-removable hook on one side. This can be a plus or a minus for you. I didn't care. It is detachable, but this requires its permanent separation.2. Make sure you pull the strap through the cam lock in the correct direction. There is an arrow on the lock.3. Once you have your kayak on and strapped in, tighten the weak part of the strap. And then ask your girlfriend to pull it tight. And then you ask your friend's sister to draw it. 4. To fix a slack cable, I just close my doors on it and then tie them to Jesus' handles in the backseat. This prevents the straps from flying all over the place.

Pros
  • High marks for grip and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other picks
