Comes with a top Velcro closure, not a hook. I think it's best when the weight it's holding is evenly distributed. If he had a snag, he would pull in the middle and sag. If you have a limited supply of yarn, 1 skein will do, but if you have very thick yarn there will only be 3 skeins on the shelf. But it's space-saving, so your yarn won't be lying all over the place and in boxes. A 7.5" x 9.75" notepad fits in the side pockets. I don't recommend putting heavy magazines or hardback books in your bag. I wish there was more support on each shelf. Basically I am satisfied with the product. It does the job now.
