Something to say about simplicity. Simple designs are often the best. Sponge filters fall into this category. They are popular in the hobby because they work. It may not seem like doing much in your aquarium until you clean it in a bucket of water for the first time. All of my aquariums have a sponge filter or two. Both as a reserve for a canister or cooktop, and as an additional surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow. I have several different brands but my favorite is the hydro sponge filters. The ability to just add a stone to the filter and air it is a huge bonus for this brand.
