Review on Rugged Ridge 11586.11 Tire Carrier Removal Plate Kit: 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK by Marcos Fiallo

Revainrating 4 out of 5

A great way to remove a spare tire without drilling or changing the wiring.

I am very happy with it. Installation took about an hour. I was able to keep my third brake light with no rewiring or drilling, so good news. I was hoping to move my license plate to the new installation as well, but then realized I would need to install some form of license plate light as it is not supplied. I don't want to be stopped by the police, so the license plate stays. Otherwise, removing the spare wheel holder and keeping the existing third brake light is a pretty good option. It should be noted that the instructions for installing the brake light are a bit unclear. Maybe I can help. Before doing anything, you need to remove the third brake light from its bracket. There are four screws on the back for this. Once you've done that, you can cut power to the brake light and set it aside. Then proceed to remove the holder. Then add a large plate to the jeep using the existing screws. Then add the brake light to another piece of metal before screwing it to the large plate. It's a little tricky, so take your time with it. Then screw it onto the black plate. Rugged Ridge should be clearer on this. You will need a 14mm head for the main bolts and a wrench of the same size. You will need a wrench as there is not enough space to attach the bushing to add the second part to the first part.

Pros
  • Kit available includes license plate and third brake light brackets (1158611)
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
