I use Panasonic (formerly Sanyo) Eneloop batteries around the house. Although D-size rechargeable batteries are becoming more available, I have enough AA batteries to use them. Adapters provide an inexpensive way to use two AA batteries in a device that requires a D-size battery. The same goes for AAA, AA, C, and D batteries (they all have the same output voltage), it's just a matter of physical size and the amount of energy stored. A typical D-size battery has a capacity of 10 mAh. Using two AAs will give you about half that, but for most of my applications (e.g. having an emergency lamp ready in the event of a power outage) I'm less concerned with run time and more concerned with device readiness. when i need it I may upgrade to some true rechargeable D cells in the future, but these adapters are perfect and an inexpensive step in between.
