A few years ago I bought a small yarn winder to see how it would help me manage my yarn. I've found yarn cakes to be easier to store and use. Over time, the plastic parts wore out and it became increasingly difficult to get cakes clean and tangle-free. I saw this weather vane on sale so I ordered it. Great solution, I'm excited. It's bigger and heavier, and wraps larger strands. The gears are metal so I'm less worried about wear. Cupcakes are clean and compact, keep well. They match my yarn bowls. So far no tangles like I use them. It took a little trial and error until I got the filament guides in the right place as they didn't come with instructions. I place the long guide at about a 75 degree angle to the main body and run the yarn through it first and then through the small rotating guide. I attach the guide to my workbench because a heavy winder needs a solid surface. I am very happy with this purchase.
