BAD FOR FISH!: Aquarium Substrate

I bought this because I didn't want to grow plants in this aquarium. Now I have 5 aquariums (all with fresh water). I think I'm pretty sure about what I'm saying/doing at this point. These are painted stones. The color came off the stones about 2 months after installation in my aquarium. Left it muddy black and made me run to save my flowerhorn. The guys who put this together and brought it to market could definitely burn in hell for this... I mean, my fish definitely don't swim in acid, so explain why the paint is peeling off these rocks.
