My favorite working filament

Now that I have my third roll of this material I feel comfortable writing a review. I really like this thread and I really don't think there is a PLA that can beat it for the price. There are more attractive and durable PLAs like Polymax, but they cost twice as much for a smaller roll. With Hatchbox Black I don't feel like every bad impression is flushing my money down the toilet. The finish has an attractive glossy sheen and the material itself is very dimensionally stable, reducing blemishes and blemishes provided you have a good extruder/hot end. I've had good results with nozzles from 0.4mm to 1mm nozzle with large thick marks. If you print roughly, this material is very durable (by PLA standards). I also have better bed adhesion with this material than its cheaper counterparts. Obviously it won't replace materials like polycarbonate for prints that require extreme durability and heat resistance. It's not magic. But if you want a cheap filament that works well for draft and final products (many uses), you can't go wrong with the Hatchbox Black PLA. The surface becomes matte, not glossy. Sometimes removing large impressions leaves a chalky white film on the underside for some reason, but a few seconds with a hair dryer will remove this easily. , you lose that stunning glossy finish. However, I find that if your printer is set up well and you're good at cutting files, you shouldn't need to do much sanding.

Pros
  • Very good price
Cons
  • Incredible piggy bank
