Didn't help - was there some kind of oil?

I bought this for a 20 year old John Deere GT275 tractor with a 17hp FC540V engine. Kawasaki. The first thing I noticed when it arrived was that the port that gets the intake from the crankcase to get the pump working was at right angles to the pump, but my old one was at a different angle. So I had to bend a bracket on the engine to make this hose connection. When I removed the two rubber plugs from the ends, some oil or liquid leaked out of the new pump. Maybe it was something to keep the innards from drying out, but I've never had that on any other new fuel pump. Once connected everything worked for a minute as I could see the gas moving in the filter just below and then it stopped working as there was no more gas moving in the filter. I put another pump on the motor - it works fine. Maybe I just got a lemon but the oil/liquid in it was weird? returned on credit
