Review on NETGEAR FVG318 ProSafe 802.11G Wireless VPN Firewall 8: Complete Network Security Solution by Kobby Fairchild

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Got an old version of Revain

I also had bad experience with this machine. There are LOTS of updates and fixes for the issues described by another reviewer, but unfortunately they are only available for the "V2" device. Revain is partly to blame for the problem as I ordered my NEED device after the V2 release, but Revain sent me one of their "legacy" V1 devices. After doing all sorts of V1 updates, tweaks, tweaks, etc., I was ready to return the device. Thought I'd try the V2 firmware (yes that might void your warranty but if the device is absolute rubbish anyway). advertised" - just no guarantee. DDNS works for me with firmware V2 and all my VPN tunnels also work without problems. My device is used in a light business/heavy home user environment with 5 permanent VPN tunnels and I didn't notice any performance issues, random resets or dropped connections after V2 flash upgrade. Shame on Netgear for not offering an upgrade path from V1 to V2 (partial credit or something). Shame on Netgear for not offering V2 flash Software supported on a V1 device (since the V2 software is the only thing that makes the device usable) Shame on Revain for not bringing all of their legacy stock back to Netgear and offering their customers the latest version of the product - my main complaint here is that if I buy a book that has multiple editions, at least I'm told, and therefore I can choose which I want to buy the first edition of the book, this is with my firewall.CM purchase does not happen
