Ideal for runners, not cyclists. I programmed a standard walking loop as "treadmill"; I just flipped through it once and saved it. Now when I wear it while running, it tells me how far I've come, how much I have to walk and how fast I'm running. It is also easy to carry in your hand. For cycling, this is a great tool to travel to new places. I just go online, find the latitude and longitude of the intersections I'm going to turn at, enter them into the etrex as "waypoints" and program the "route" that connects them. The device then tells me the distance to the next turn and displays a large arrow when it's time to turn. It's much easier to use than carrying around a card. The distance and speed functions aren't that useful; it is easier and more accurate to measure with a bike computer. The major disadvantage of any type of navigation is that you have to enter the longitude and latitude of intersections through a clunky interface. It would be much easier to hook it up to a card on a PC, yes. However, once you've done the journey, it retraces your steps for you, which is a nice feature. The signal level is sufficient. It works best when you stand still from turning it on to finding satellites. Battery life is decent; I put it in "battery saver mode" which seems to track satellites less often but still gives me decent directions. There is a backlight. All in all, the Garmin eTrex Waterproof GPS Case (Yellow) is cheaper than one of those watches that use GPS satellites to measure your speed and is a lot more functional. If you have to drive a lot on familiar roads, this device is not for you. For running, however, it's a great tool; therefore I give 4 stars.
